Representatives of the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society Participated in a Meeting in Turkmenistan, with Attention Drawn to the Landmine Threat
On 4 September 2025, in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, a meeting entitled “The International Year of Peace and Trust – Humanism and Neutrality” was held with the participation of the leaders of the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies of CIS countries, alongside representatives of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society was represented at the meeting by Secretary General Jeyhun Mirzayev and Deputy Secretary General Shaban Shayev. In his address, Jeyhun Mirzayev highlighted the issue of mine contamination in the post-conflict period in the Republic of Azerbaijan. He noted that Azerbaijan is considered one of the countries most heavily affected by landmine contamination worldwide. Approximately 1.5 million mines and countless explosive devices were deployed across the territories during the years of war. These mines pose not only a direct threat to human life but also contribute to land degradation, environmental pollution, and hinder the development of agriculture.
Furthermore, Jeyhun Mirzayev underscored the Society’s activities related to this challenge, including mine clearance, first aid, and MHPSS (Mental Health and Psychosocial Support).
