On 20–21 January 2026, Ilgar Hasanov, Head of Sector at the State Service for Supervision over the Use and Protection of Water Resources under the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency, participated in the 28th session of the Working Group on Water, Energy and Environment held within the framework of SPECA Week of the United Nations Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA).
During the session organized in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, the representative of the State Service delivered a presentation on the topic of “Safety of Water Dams.”
In his remarks, Mr. Hasanov emphasized the critical role of water dams in drinking water supply, irrigation, and energy production, while also noting the high-risk nature of such facilities. Drawing on Azerbaijan’s experience, he presented approaches related to the application of supervision and continuous monitoring mechanisms for hydraulic structures.
The Head of Sector noted that these approaches enable the early identification of risks, prompt assessment of technical conditions, and the systematic implementation of safety measures. He also underscored the importance of applying advanced international practices in this field and enhancing the exchange of expertise.
Within the framework of the Working Group’s activities, the importance of utilizing modern technologies was highlighted, and views were exchanged on measures envisaged to be taken by member states in this area in the future.
As part of SPECA Week, the SPECA Economic Forum titled “International Year of Peace and Trust: Regional Cooperation for Sustainable Development” is also being held on 21 January 2026. The Forum brings together high-level representatives of member states, senior officials of international organizations, and experts.
Discussions within the Forum focus on strengthening regional cooperation in the fields of energy, transport, and trade, as well as digitalization and the development of economic corridors. Azerbaijan’s active participation in these platforms once again demonstrates the country’s contribution to regional cooperation and its open and constructive approach to international initiatives.
