Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan Launch the Implementation of the eTIR System for Transit Transport
The implementation of the eTIR system has officially commenced for transit transport operations between Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
A shipment of televisions and audio equipment departing from Azerbaijan and heading east was transported across the Caspian Sea to the Turkmenbashi International Seaport. It then entered Uzbekistan through the Farap border crossing point. This operation marks the first eTIR transport linking Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan under a single, unified transit procedure.
At the same time, in the westbound direction, four trucks carrying cotton, juice, bottled water, and confectionery products from Turkmenistan completed customs clearance at the Turkmenbashi International Seaport. The vehicles were then transported by ferry across the Caspian Sea and arrived at the Baku International Sea Trade Port.
The successful implementation of the system was made possible through the close cooperation among the customs authorities of Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the International Road Transport Union (IRU), and its member associations ABADA, THADA, and AIRCUZ.
Implemented with the support of the International Road Transport Union (IRU), the project enables the real-time electronic exchange of customs data, reduces the volume of paper-based documentation, minimizes risks, accelerates customs procedures, lowers operational costs, and facilitates both transport operations and international trade.
Furthermore, the implementation of the eTIR system is expected to enhance the attractiveness of the Middle Corridor and contribute to increasing the volume of cargo transported along this strategic route.
