Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan presidents inspect destruction in Fuzuli
On 23 June, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov inspected areas destroyed in the city of Fuzuli.
Emin Huseynov, the Presidential Special Representative for Aghdam, Fuzuli and Khojavend districts, briefed the Turkmen president on the destruction and acts of vandalism allegedly carried out by Armenian armed forces during the 30-year occupation, as well as on ongoing and planned reconstruction work in line with the city’s master plan.
He noted that Fuzuli, once a densely populated and developing city, was completely looted and left in ruins during the occupation period. Following its liberation, a master plan for the city was swiftly prepared and approved by the head of state.
Fuzuli is located at a key transport and logistics junction in the Karabakh and East Zangezur economic regions. Covering nearly 2,000 hectares, the master plan envisages a population of 50,000 by 2040. The rebuilt city will incorporate a “smart city” concept in line with modern urban planning standards.
The Turkmen president was also briefed on a mosque being constructed in Fuzuli by Turkmenistan.
The foundation of the mosque was laid online in October last year by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, and other heads of state and government attending the 12th Summit of the Council of Heads of State of the Organization of Turkic States in Gabala.
The mosque complex will cover more than one hectare. It will feature two 40-metre minarets and a 30-metre central dome. The mosque will accommodate up to 500 worshippers at a time.
